Scared of surgery?
By: Dr. Richard McClain, Allied Bone and Joint Plymouth Office
I had a patient recently express his concern regarding knee replacement surgery, despite two worn-out knees. He harbored this fear not because of pain, but because a friend of a friend had a poor outcome. My patient concluded knee replacements didn’t work. He preferred limited mobility and chronic pain over surgery because of misinformed comments.
While I certainly respected his wishes, I was saddened that they weren’t based on facts. Knee replacement surgery is extremely effective at relieving pain and restoring function. There are numerous makes and models and surgical approaches, and overall patient satisfaction remains high. I underwent such a surgery last summer. I held off as long as I could, used all the non-operative treatments until, finally, “it was time.” I wanted my life back and I was tired of the pain.
Knee replacement surgery may not be for everyone but overwhelmingly helps the vast majority of people. Make an informed decision about how you want to regain or maintain your quality of life. My goal is to help you improve your Life in Motion.
